Phuket to Koh Samui — One-Hour Direct Flight, or Bus and Ferry Across the Peninsula via Donsak: Which Is Worth It

Phuket and Koh Samui sit on opposite coasts, so there is no direct boat. Choose between a one-hour direct flight at a premium and a combined bus-and-ferry ticket via Donsak pier that takes most of a day but costs far less.

Phuket is on the Andaman coast and Koh Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand, with the whole peninsula in between. There is no boat between them. That leaves two very different options: fly across in about an hour, or cross by road and take the ferry from Donsak. They differ in both time and price like different worlds.

Flying direct

Samui airport is privately owned by a single airline, so only one carrier flies the Phuket–Samui route and fares rarely drop. The flight takes 55–60 minutes, but adding the transfer to Phuket airport, check-in and baggage means it still uses half a day. The advantage is arriving on Samui in daylight and reaching your beach by early evening.

Bus and ferry (one combined ticket)

This is how most people do it. A bus or minivan leaves Phuket town (some operators pick up from hotels in Patong or Kata), drives 4–5 hours across the peninsula through Phang Nga and Surat Thani to Donsak pier, then a ferry or fast boat continues to Samui in 1.5–2 hours. A combined ticket matches the bus to the boat, so you cannot miss the connection.

Most departures are in the morning and arrive on Samui in the late afternoon or evening, at Nathon or Lipa Noi pier depending on the ferry company. Taxis and shared songthaews run from the piers to Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut.

Doing it yourself via Surat Thani

To save the most, or to stop in Surat Thani, take an intercity bus Phuket–Surat Thani (about 4–5 hours), then the ferry company's own shuttle from town to Donsak. Every ferry operator runs pickups from the bus terminal and the town centre. The downside is waiting time between legs, and if you reach Surat Thani late in the afternoon you may only get an evening boat that arrives after dark.

The reverse direction (Samui → Phuket)

Same trip in reverse: a morning ferry from Samui to Donsak, then the bus to Phuket by evening, or the one-hour flight. If you have an onward flight out of Phuket the same day, leave at least 3–4 hours of buffer; this bus route falls behind schedule easily in the rainy season.

Seasons

The two coasts have opposite rainy seasons: the Andaman side (Phuket) is wettest from May to October, while the Gulf side (Samui) is wettest from October to December. Many travellers switch coasts with the season. The Donsak–Samui ferries are large vessels that run almost every day, except in genuinely rough weather late in the year.

Common mistakes

• Expecting a direct Phuket–Samui boat. There is none; you always cross the mainland first.
• Booking bus and ferry separately with no margin. Use a combined ticket or allow at least 1.5 hours at Donsak.
• Arriving on Samui after dark without a booking. Evening ferries land close to 8 pm; book your beach in advance.
