Phuket to Krabi, Ao Nang and Railay — Bus, Minivan or Ferry, and Why the Boat Only Makes Sense in High Season
Moving from Phuket to the Krabi side is a two-to-three-hour hop by road all year, or a scenic ferry in the dry months. Which to pick, where each drops you, and how to reach Railay at the end.
Phuket and Krabi face each other across Phang Nga Bay. By road it is about three hours, and in the dry season a ferry cuts across the bay past the limestone islands. Most travellers make this hop once, in one direction, so it pays to get the drop-off point right.
Options
| Option | Time | Departs | Arrives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minivan | About 3 hours | Phuket Town bus terminal, or hotel pick-up | Krabi Town or Ao Nang | Most frequent; hotel-to-hotel options |
| Bus | About 3.5 hours | Phuket Bus Terminal 2 | Krabi bus terminal (Talat Kao) | Cheap, less frequent, more luggage room |
| Ferry (roughly Nov–Apr) | About 2–3 hours | Rassada pier, Phuket | Railay / Ao Nang / Krabi Klong Jilad | Scenic; some services via Phi Phi |
| Private car | About 2.5–3 hours | Hotel | Anywhere | Split between a group it is reasonable |
By road
Minivans are the default. From Phuket's beaches (Patong, Kata, Karon) the first hour is spent getting off the island, so hotel pick-up services save time and hassle. Vans terminate in Krabi Town or continue to Ao Nang for a little more; ask before booking. Buses from Terminal 2 are cheaper but end at Krabi's out-of-town terminal.

By ferry (high season)
From roughly November to April, ferries and speedboats leave Rassada pier for Railay, Ao Nang and Krabi Town, some stopping at Phi Phi on the way. It takes longer than the road once you count getting to Rassada, but it is a beautiful crossing, and if you were going to Phi Phi anyway it links the whole trip into one ticket. In the rainy season these boats stop; use the road.

Getting to Railay at the end
Railay has no road. From Ao Nang, longtails leave from the beach when they have enough passengers (10–15 minutes); from Krabi Town, longtails from Chao Fa pier take about 45 minutes. Both stop around dusk. If you arrive in the evening by minivan, sleep in Ao Nang and cross in the morning.
Which drop-off?
- Ao Nang: beach resort, Railay boats, boat tours; choose if you are staying on the Krabi coast.
- Krabi Town: bus terminal, ferry pier for Lanta and Phi Phi, cheaper rooms; choose if you are in transit to the islands.
- Railay: only by boat; choose the ferry in high season or a van to Ao Nang plus longtail.
Common mistakes
- Booking a van to "Krabi" and ending up in Krabi Town when your hotel is in Ao Nang.
- Looking for the ferry in August. It does not run.
- Arriving in Ao Nang after dark expecting a longtail to Railay.
Summary
Take a minivan with hotel pick-up to Ao Nang in any season. In the dry months, consider the Rassada ferry to Railay for the scenery or to combine with Phi Phi. Whatever you choose, plan to reach Railay before dusk.
