Koh Tao sits at the far end of the Gulf island chain, so every boat from the mainland stops at Koh Samui and Koh Phangan first. From Surat Thani, budget four to six hours for the whole trip, and choose your departure around the boat schedule rather than the other way round.

The boats
High-speed catamarans (Lomprayah) leave from Tapee pier in town or Donsak, call at Samui and Phangan, and reach Koh Tao in about 4–5 hours from Surat Thani including the road leg. Fast, air-conditioned, and the usual choice.

Slow ferries (such as Songserm) take longer but cost less and handle rough water better.
The night boat leaves Surat Thani's Ban Don pier in the evening and arrives at Koh Tao around dawn after about 8 hours. It is basic (a mattress on the deck), cheap, and saves a night's accommodation. Take it only if you are comfortable sleeping in a shared cabin space.

Timing
- The last catamaran to Koh Tao leaves in the early afternoon. Flights landing at Surat Thani after about midday usually miss it, leaving the night boat or a night in Surat Thani.
- Morning trains from Bangkok arriving around 6–9 am connect to the first boats; evening sleepers arriving very early give you a wait at the pier.
- In October–December, Gulf storms cancel catamarans more often than slow ferries; keep a flexible day if you have a flight to catch afterwards.
Arriving on Koh Tao
All boats land at Mae Haad pier. Sairee, the main beach and dive-school strip, is a short taxi ride north; taxis on the island charge fixed, relatively high fares, and many dive resorts include a pier pick-up. If you are on Koh Tao to dive, book the course first and let the school arrange the transfer.

- Booking an afternoon flight into Surat Thani and discovering the last boat has gone.
