Phuket to Koh Phi Phi — Ferry or Speedboat from Rassada Pier, Day Trip or Stay, and What Changes in Low Season
The most popular island hop in the Andaman. Ferry versus speedboat from Phuket's Rassada pier, why a day trip and an overnight stay are different decisions, and how the monsoon months change the timetable.
Phi Phi is about 45 km east of Phuket and is the most travelled boat route in southern Thailand. The question is rarely whether you can get there, but which boat, and whether to stay or go for the day, because the two answers lead to quite different trips.
Boats from Phuket
| Option | Time | Departs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferry | About 2 hours | Rassada pier, Phuket Town | Cheapest, stable, morning and early-afternoon departures; luggage is easy |
| Speedboat | About 45–60 minutes | Rassada pier or resort piers | Faster, rougher; several departures in high season; limited luggage |
| Day tour by speedboat | Full day | Hotel pick-up | Visits Maya Bay area, lagoons and snorkelling stops; you do not stay on the island |
Ferries and most speedboats land at Tonsai pier on Phi Phi Don, the inhabited island. Phi Phi Leh, with Maya Bay, has no accommodation and is visited by boat tour.

Getting to Rassada pier
The pier is on the edge of Phuket Town, 45–60 minutes from Patong or Kata and about 40 minutes from the airport. Most ferry tickets can be bought with a hotel or airport pick-up included, which removes the hardest part of the morning. Be at the pier 30–45 minutes before departure to exchange your voucher.
Day trip or stay?
- Day trip suits people based in Phuket who want the scenery of Phi Phi Leh: Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and the viewpoints. You spend most of the day on a boat with a group and see Tonsai only briefly.
- Staying one or two nights lets you do the viewpoint hike at sunrise, take a longtail to the quieter beaches, and dive or snorkel without the crowd. Tonsai village is noisy at night; the resorts on the northern beaches (Laem Tong, Loh Bagao) are reached by resort boat and are much calmer.
Seasons
Phi Phi is on the Andaman coast: best from November to April. From roughly May to October seas are rougher, speedboats are reduced and the ferry becomes the sensible choice; Maya Bay itself closes for part of the low season for reef recovery, so check before planning around it.
Onward from Phi Phi
Boats continue from Tonsai to Krabi (Klong Jilad), Ao Nang and Railay, and Koh Lanta, so Phi Phi works as a stepping stone rather than a return trip to Phuket.
Common mistakes
- Booking a speedboat in rough season and spending an hour being thrown around; take the ferry.
- Not allowing time to reach Rassada. Patong to the pier in morning traffic takes longer than the map suggests.
- Bringing a large suitcase onto a speedboat. Space is limited; ferries handle luggage far better.
Summary
Take the ferry from Rassada with hotel pick-up included, especially outside the dry season. Decide beforehand whether you want a boat-tour day or a night or two on Phi Phi Don, and use the island as a stepping stone to Krabi or Lanta rather than going back to Phuket.
