Koh Phi Phi sits almost exactly halfway between Phuket and Krabi, so people often ask which side to leave from. If you are in Krabi or flying into Krabi, the answer is simple: the boat from Krabi takes about the same time as from Phuket, but the pier is much closer to the airport, so a same-day connection is relaxed rather than rushed.

Step 1: Reaching Krabi

From Bangkok, fly to Krabi in about 1 hour 20 minutes or take an overnight bus of 11–13 hours. If Phi Phi is the goal on the same day, a morning flight landing before noon matters most, because the last ferry from Klong Jilad leaves in the afternoon.

Step 2: Klong Jilad pier → Tonsai pier, Koh Phi Phi

Klong Jilad pier is on the edge of Krabi town, about 25–30 minutes from the airport by minivan or taxi. Most ferry companies sell combined tickets with pickup from the airport or from hotels in town and Ao Nang. The large ferries take 1.5–2 hours to Tonsai pier on Phi Phi Don, the island's only pier. Accommodation in Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum is within walking distance; the northern beaches (Laem Tong, Loh Bagao) need a resort longtail transfer.

Speedboats from Ao Nang (roughly November to April)

If you are already staying in Ao Nang or Railay, dry-season speedboats leave straight from the beach in front of the resorts and take under an hour. The advantage is not going back into town; the downsides are a rougher ride, spray on your luggage, and immediate cancellation in strong wind. On bad-weather days the company moves you to the Klong Jilad ferry instead.

Fees and what to prepare

Phi Phi charges a cleaning and conservation fee collected at Tonsai pier on arrival; bring cash.
Most accommodation is reached on foot or by longtail from the pier. The island has no cars, and wheeled suitcases struggle on the narrow concrete paths; a backpack is easier.
Boat trips to Phi Phi Leh and Maya Bay can be bought on the island; no need to bundle them from Krabi.

Seasons

Phi Phi is Andaman: calm seas from November to April, monsoon from May to October. The Klong Jilad–Phi Phi ferry keeps running in the rainy season but drops to one or two sailings, and may cancel on days with high swell. Speedboats stop for the season. Maya Bay closes for recovery each year around August–September.

Common mistakes

Landing at Krabi in the late afternoon and hoping for a same-day boat. The last ferry leaves in the afternoon; if you land late, stay one night in Ao Nang.
Booking a northern-beach resort without budgeting the longtail. Ask the resort about pickup at Tonsai pier when you book.
Buying a speedboat ticket in the rainy season. Use the Klong Jilad ferry and book the morning sailing, which is cancelled less often.
