Pai is only about 130 km from Chiang Mai, yet the trip takes three to four hours because Route 1095 climbs through the mountains in a continuous series of bends — the "762 curves" printed on souvenir T-shirts. Almost everyone goes by minivan, and the question everyone asks is will I get carsick?

Minivans: the default option

Reducing motion sickness

  1. Take motion-sickness medication 30–60 minutes before departure, not when you already feel ill.
  2. Choose a morning departure: an empty stomach and cooler air help.
  3. Do not read or use your phone; look ahead at the road.
  4. Eat lightly before the trip — neither empty nor stuffed.
  5. If the van stops midway, get out and walk for five minutes.

Alternatives

Option Suits Watch out for
Rental car, self-drive Families, or anyone who wants to stop at viewpoints Narrow road, hairpin bends, slippery and foggy in the rainy season; not for drivers unused to mountain roads
Rental motorbike Very experienced riders only Frequent accidents. You need a motorcycle licence and a helmet; most travel insurance will not pay out without a valid licence
Chiang Mai–Mae Hong Son bus Travelers with time who want to save money Slower than the minivan, few departures
