Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai — Green Bus from Arcade Terminal, Minivans, or a Private Transfer via the White Temple
The standard northern hop. How the hourly bus works and which class to pick, when a minivan or private car makes more sense, and how to fit the White Temple and Blue Temple into the journey.
Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are about 190 km apart on a good highway, and the bus does this route so well that few people consider anything else. There is no railway and no regular flight between the two, so the choice is between bus classes, minivans and a private car that stops at the temples on the way.

The bus
Green Bus is the main operator, with departures roughly every hour from early morning to evening.
Classes: the top class (often labelled X or VIP) has wide reclining seats in a 2+1 layout and few stops; the standard air-conditioned class is fine for three hours and cheaper. Book the top class if you want to sleep or work.
Stops: express services make one or two stops; others call at towns along the way and take longer. Check the arrival time when booking.
Terminals: buses leave from Arcade Terminal 3, 10–15 minutes from the old city by songthaew or taxi, and arrive at Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1 in the city centre (a few also use Terminal 2, outside town). Terminal 1 is a short walk from the night bazaar and many guesthouses.

Minivans
Vans are marginally faster and can be convenient if one leaves from near your hotel, but luggage space is limited and the ride is less comfortable than the top bus class. They are the better choice only when bus times do not suit you.
Private transfer with temple stops
Chiang Rai's most visited sights, Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) and Wat Rong Suea Ten (the Blue Temple), lie on the way into town. A private car or shared transfer that stops at them turns the transit day into a sightseeing day and saves a separate outing. Split between three or four people it is reasonable value; solo travellers usually do better with the bus and a local trip the next day.
Continuing further
From Chiang Rai, local buses and minivans run to Mae Sai (the Myanmar border), Chiang Khong (for the Laos border and the slow boat to Luang Prabang) and the Golden Triangle area at Chiang Saen. All leave from Terminal 1.
Common mistakes
- Going to the wrong Chiang Mai terminal. Long-distance buses use Arcade (Terminal 3), not the Chang Phuak terminal used by local services.
- Booking a bus that arrives at Terminal 2 without allowing for the ride into town.
- Visiting during the smoke season (March–April) without knowing about the haze; mountain views suffer and air quality is poor.
Summary
Take the top-class Green Bus from Arcade Terminal and arrive in the centre of Chiang Rai in about three hours. Choose a private transfer only if you want the White Temple and Blue Temple on the way in and can share the cost.
