Nong Khai sits on the Mekong opposite Vientiane, at the end of Thailand's northeastern railway. Most travellers pass through on the way to Laos, but the town rewards a night: a long riverside promenade, the surreal Sala Kaew Ku sculpture park, and a slower pace than anywhere on the tourist trail.

Options from Bangkok

Option Time Notes
Overnight sleeper train About 10–11 hours Leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat in the evening, arrives Nong Khai in the morning; second-class air-conditioned sleepers
Daytime train About 11–12 hours Rapid services with seats; long but scenic across Isaan
Fly to Udon Thani + minivan 1 hour + 1 hour Nong Khai has no airport; Udon Thani is 55 km south with frequent flights
Overnight bus About 9–10 hours From Mo Chit 2; arrives before dawn at Nong Khai bus terminal

The sleeper

The northeastern sleeper is one of Thailand's easiest overnight trains: it leaves in the evening, reaches Nong Khai station early in the morning, and the station is a short tuk-tuk ride from the riverside guesthouses. Book the lower berth in a second-class air-conditioned carriage. If your goal is Laos, a cross-border train continues from Nong Khai over the Friendship Bridge to Thanaleng and on towards Vientiane; see our Bangkok–Vientiane guide for the border steps.

Flying via Udon Thani

Udon Thani airport has flights all day from both Bangkok airports. Minivans and taxis run from the airport to Nong Khai in about an hour, and some continue to the Friendship Bridge. Total time is around four hours door to door, against ten on the train.

Staying in Nong Khai

Crossing to Laos

The First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge is a few kilometres from town. Shuttle buses cross it from the Thai immigration post; you cannot walk across. Lao visa on arrival or an e-visa is available to many nationalities; check current rules. From the Lao side, Vientiane is about 20 km by taxi or bus.

Common mistakes

Summary

Take the evening sleeper and wake up on the Mekong. Fly to Udon Thani only if time is short. Stay a night in Nong Khai before crossing the Friendship Bridge, and check Lao entry rules before you go.
