Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui sit in a line in the Gulf of Thailand. From Bangkok they all use the same pattern — road or rail south, then a boat — but the right mainland pier depends on which island you are going to. Getting this wrong is the most common way to lose half a day.

Some fast boats run Chumphon → Koh Tao → Koh Phangan → Koh Samui in one service, so you can reach any of the three; the further the island from Chumphon, the longer the trip.
Option 1: Combined bus-and-boat ticket
The main boat companies run their own buses from Bangkok in the evening, arriving at the Chumphon pier in the morning to connect straight onto a boat. Best for Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, because the bus and boat times are designed to match.
- Pros: no thinking about boat times, staff shepherd you onto the boat, your bag stays with you.
- Cons: a night on the bus followed immediately by a boat — bring seasickness tablets.
Option 2: Train to Chumphon or Surat Thani, then boat
Best for people who cannot sleep on a bus. A sleeper train from Krung Thep Aphiwat reaches Chumphon in the early morning; transfers run from the station to the pier (some packages include this) for the morning fast boat.
The thing to get right is the gap between train arrival and boat departure — leave at least an hour for train delays. Booking through a site that sells the journey as one itinerary pairs compatible connections for you.
Option 3: Fly to Surat Thani, or fly straight to Samui
- Fly to Surat Thani on a low-cost carrier, then transfer to Don Sak and take the ferry to Samui or Phangan. Combined bus-and-boat tickets from the airport exist. Around four to five hours from landing to the island.
- Fly direct to Samui is fastest but most expensive, because Samui airport is served mainly by one airline. Good if time is short, or for groups splitting the cost.
- There are no direct flights to Koh Tao; you fly to Surat Thani or Chumphon and take a boat regardless.
Seasons that affect boats
The Gulf has its monsoon late in the year (roughly October to December): rough seas, fast boats cancelled or replaced by slower large ferries. Travelling then, allow spare days and choose tickets that can be changed or refunded.
