Samui's own airport is the fastest way in and the most expensive. How the Surat Thani route works with three ferry companies from two piers, what the overnight bus-and-ferry combo is really like, and which arrival pier suits which beach.
Koh Samui is the only Gulf island with its own airport, and that shapes every decision. Flying direct is quick but carries a premium, because the airport is privately owned and served by a limited number of carriers. Every cheaper route goes through Surat Thani on the mainland and ends with a ferry.

Flying direct
Direct flights land you on the island before lunch, which matters for short holidays. Fares are often two to three times a low-cost flight to Surat Thani, so compare the total: the Surat Thani route costs less but takes half a day longer and involves two transfers.
The Surat Thani route: piers and ferry companies
Three companies serve the crossing, from two mainland piers:
- Donsak pier (about 1–1.5 hours from Surat Thani airport) is used by the big car ferries. Raja Ferry lands at Lipa Noi on Samui's west coast; Seatran lands at Nathon, the main town. Both take about 1.5 hours and run frequently through the day.
- Tapee pier (in Surat Thani town) is used by Lomprayah's high-speed catamarans, landing at Nathon or Maenam in about 1.5–2 hours including the road leg.
The company usually matters less than the arrival pier: Nathon and Lipa Noi are on the west, while the popular beaches (Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut) are on the east and north, 30–45 minutes away by songthaew or taxi. Buy a ticket that includes island transfer to your hotel if you can.

The overnight bus-and-ferry combo
Combined tickets leave Bangkok in the evening, reach Donsak around dawn and put you on the first ferry. It is the cheapest way to the island and works well if you sleep on buses. Choose a VIP coach rather than a standard bus for the nine hours on the road, and expect to arrive on the island before check-in time.
Seasons
Samui's rainy season is October to December, when the Gulf gets heavy rain and rough seas; ferries still run but crossings are uncomfortable and occasionally cancelled. The Andaman islands are rough at a different time, so if your dates fall in November, consider Samui's calmer neighbours or a different coast.
Common mistakes
- Booking a ferry to Nathon without budgeting the taxi to Chaweng. Island taxis are expensive; a ticket with hotel transfer is often cheaper overall.
- Comparing only the direct-flight fare. Add up the Surat Thani route before deciding it is too slow.
- Arriving on the last ferry in the rainy season. Cancellations leave you in Donsak overnight.
