Koh Lipe lies in Tarutao National Marine Park at the southern tip of Thailand's Andaman coast. There is no painless one-day route from Bangkok. Every itinerary passes through Pak Bara pier in Satun province, and the boats are seasonal, so planning starts with "when" before "how".
The season matters most
- Late October to May (high season): speedboats run daily with several departures, and the island's resorts and restaurants are fully open.
- June to September (southwest monsoon): rough seas, reduced or suspended boat services, many places closed. If you must travel then, confirm with the boat operator before buying flights, and keep a spare day for cancellations.

Step 2: Hat Yai or Trang → Pak Bara pier
From Hat Yai airport, shared minivans to Pak Bara can be booked as a combined "van + boat" ticket, which is the easiest option because the van waits for the flight and the boat waits for the van.
Doing it yourself means going into Hat Yai and taking a minivan from the bus station to La-ngu / Pak Bara; it takes longer and may miss the morning boat.
The last boat from Pak Bara leaves in the early afternoon. Flights landing in Hat Yai after midday usually miss it, forcing a night in Pak Bara or Hat Yai. Work backwards from the boat time when choosing your flight.

Step 3: Pak Bara → Koh Lipe
- Speedboats take about 1.5 hours, often calling at Koh Tarutao or Koh Khai on the way.
- The island has no pier. Boats moor at a floating platform and you transfer to a longtail to the beach, with a small extra fee and a wade through the shallows. Wear shoes that can get wet and protect your luggage.
- The national park fee is collected en route and is considerably higher for foreigners.
- The main beaches are Pattaya Beach (where the boats arrive; busy) and Sunrise Beach (quieter), linked by the walking street across the island.
The alternative: arrive from Malaysia
In high season, boats run directly from Langkawi (Malaysia) to Koh Lipe in about 1.5 hours, with an immigration post on the island. Ideal for trips that combine Malaysia and Thailand.
Common mistakes
- Booking flights before checking boat times, then landing in Hat Yai in the afternoon and losing a night in Pak Bara.
- Travelling in monsoon season with no backup plan. Boats are cancelled day by day.
- Bringing a large wheeled suitcase. It has to go into a longtail and through the water; a backpack is far easier.
