Thailand's rainforest park sits between the Gulf and the Andaman. How to get there from Bangkok and from the beaches, why you should decide on the lake before you book, and what the two very different park experiences involve.
Khao Sok is the rainforest stop on the way between the Gulf islands and the Andaman coast. It has two distinct experiences: the village and jungle trails at the park entrance, and the floating raft houses on Cheow Lan Lake an hour away. Deciding which you want before you travel saves a wasted day.

The two Khao Soks
The park entrance village
A strip of guesthouses, tree houses and restaurants along the road to the park gate. From here you can walk the marked trails to waterfalls, take a guided night walk, tube or canoe on the Sok River, and see the giant rafflesia flower in season. Good for one or two nights and doable independently.
Cheow Lan Lake and the raft houses
The lake is about an hour's drive from the village at Ratchaprapha Dam, then a longtail across limestone-studded water to floating raft-house camps. You sleep in a bamboo or timber hut on the water, swim off the deck, and take dawn boat trips to spot gibbons and hornbills. It is booked as a package (transport, boat, meals, guide), usually one or two nights, and camps range from basic to comfortable. This is the part most visitors remember.
Most people do both: a night in the village, then a lake package. Book the lake in advance in high season.
Seasons
Khao Sok is wet: the heaviest rain falls roughly May to November, when trails are muddy and leeches are active but the waterfalls are full and the lake is at its most dramatic. December to April is drier and busier. The park is open year-round.
Common mistakes
- Arriving at the village expecting to walk to the lake. It is an hour away by road and only accessible with a boat; join a package.
- Booking only one night. The lake alone needs a night to be worthwhile.
- Getting off the bus at the highway junction without a pick-up arranged. The village is several kilometres away.
