Bangkok to Kanchanaburi — The Death Railway Train from Thonburi, Minivans, and Getting to Erawan Falls
A route where the train is the destination. How the Death Railway service from Thonburi station works, why most people combine it with a minivan, and how to reach Erawan Falls and the Bridge on the River Kwai.
Kanchanaburi is different from every other route out of Bangkok because the train is not just transport, it is the thing people come for. The Death Railway's Tham Krasae section, where the track clings to a cliff above the Khwae Noi River, is the highlight of the trip. Arrive by minivan and you miss it.

The train: what to know first
The line's trains leave from Thonburi (Bangkok Noi) station on the west bank near Siriraj Hospital, not from the central terminal at Bang Sue and not from Hua Lamphong. This is the most common mistake on the route.
There are only a few departures a day. The early-morning train is the practical one for a day trip; miss it and the afternoon service gets you to Kanchanaburi after dark.
The whole train is third-class fan carriages (weekend excursion trains add air-conditioned cars and must be booked ahead). Windows open, the views are excellent, and you will get sun and dust.
You do not have to ride from Bangkok all the way to the waterfall. The popular shortcut is a minivan to Kanchanaburi town, then the train only for the Kanchanaburi → Tham Krasae → Sai Yok Noi stretch, which is the most scenic part and saves hours.

In town and out to the waterfalls
- Kanchanaburi station and the Bridge on the River Kwai are a few kilometres apart, and trains also stop at the "River Kwai Bridge" halt right beside the bridge.
- Erawan Falls is about 65 km from town with no rail access. Take the local songthaew or bus from Kanchanaburi bus station (about 1.5 hours) or hire a car. The last local service back leaves in the late afternoon, so ask about return times before you get off.
- The falls have seven tiers; the round trip to the top takes two to three hours. Budget for that against the last bus back.
- To see both Erawan and the Tham Krasae stretch, stay at least one night in Kanchanaburi. As a day trip you can realistically do one or the other.
Minivans: the choice when time is short
Vans from Sai Tai Mai run often and are the quickest way to town, but they terminate at Kanchanaburi bus station, so you still need a ride to your hotel or the bridge. Riverside raft guesthouses will usually collect you from the station if you tell them your arrival time.
Common mistakes
- Waiting at the wrong Bangkok station. Death Railway trains leave from Thonburi.
- Assuming the waterfall is on the railway. The terminus called "Nam Tok" is Sai Yok Noi waterfall, not Erawan; they are in different directions.
- Missing the last ride back from Erawan. Local transport from the falls stops in the late afternoon, after which a chartered pick-up is your only expensive option.
Summary
With time to spare, ride the train from Thonburi in the morning for the full line. With less time, minivan to Kanchanaburi and take the train only for the Tham Krasae section. Treat Erawan Falls as a separate half day and plan the return bus while you are on the way out.
