Bangkok to Chiang Rai — Direct Flight, Overnight Bus, or via Chiang Mai, and How to Plan a Trip That Includes Both Cities
Chiang Rai has no railway, so it comes down to flying or a night bus. The trade-offs of each, plus the one-way Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai routing that avoids backtracking.
Chiang Rai is a major destination with no railway, so from Bangkok the choice is between a flight and an overnight bus. The more important question is whether you are visiting Chiang Rai alone or combining it with Chiang Mai, because the two trips are planned differently.

Flying: the default if Chiang Rai is your only stop
Flights run all day from both Bangkok airports and off-season fares are often close to a VIP bus ticket, while saving most of a day. Points to watch:
- Match the airport to where you are staying in Bangkok. Most low-cost carriers use Don Mueang.
- Book ahead for the year-end high season. November to January is Chiang Rai's peak; fares climb quickly and sell out around long weekends.
- From Mae Fah Luang airport, airport taxis and shuttle buses reach the centre in about 20 minutes.
The overnight bus: saves a night, choose the coach carefully
Bangkok–Chiang Rai buses leave in the evening and arrive at Chiang Rai's Bus Terminal 2, outside town, before dawn.
Choose a 24-seat VIP coach if you actually want to sleep. Seats are wider and recline further than standard first class, and the difference in fare is small compared with the night of accommodation you save.
Terminal 2 is out of town; you need a songthaew or taxi into the centre. Terminal 1 is central, beside the night bazaar. Check which one your bus uses.
Arriving before dawn means hours before hotel check-in. Pick a place that stores luggage or ask about early check-in in advance.

The Chiang Mai + Chiang Rai routing without backtracking
The most efficient itinerary is fly or take the train to Chiang Mai → bus to Chiang Rai → fly back to Bangkok from Chiang Rai (or the reverse). You never retrace your route.
- Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai buses run from Chiang Mai's Arcade terminal (Terminal 3) roughly hourly through the day and take three to four hours. Services with fewer stops are noticeably quicker.
- Book open-jaw flights (into one city, out of the other). Priced as two one-way tickets, they usually cost no more than a round trip to a single city.
- To stop along the way, for example at Chiang Dao, use local buses leg by leg rather than returning to Chiang Mai.
Common mistakes
- Booking a bus that ends at the out-of-town terminal without budgeting for the ride into town, especially before dawn when songthaews are not yet running.
- Flying in and out of Chiang Mai when the trip ends in Chiang Rai, wasting three to four hours on the return leg.
- Visiting in March or April without knowing about the smoke season. Agricultural burning fills the north with haze; visibility and air quality are poor for mountain scenery.

For Chiang Rai alone, fly. For Chiang Mai plus Chiang Rai, travel in a straight line and fly into one city and out of the other. Keep the overnight bus as the budget option, accepting the pre-dawn arrival and out-of-town terminal.
