Vientiane, the Lao capital, sits directly across the Mekong from Nong Khai in Thailand, linked by the Friendship Bridge. Since rail crossed the bridge, the whole trip from Bangkok can be done by train, which makes it a favourite among rail travelers.

The direct train: know before you book
- The Lao terminus is Khamsavath station, on the edge of Vientiane; allow 20–30 minutes to reach the centre.
- The train stops at Nong Khai for Thai exit formalities, then crosses the bridge for Lao entry. Budget time for this; do not arrange an early-morning meeting.
- Sleeper berths are limited and sell out weeks ahead of Thai holidays.
Train to Nong Khai and cross yourself
Choose this if you want to stop in Nong Khai (the riverside and Tha Sadet market) or if the direct train is sold out.
- Get off at Nong Khai station; a tuk-tuk to the Friendship Bridge checkpoint takes about ten minutes.
- Thai exit stamp, then the shuttle bus across the bridge (walking is not allowed), then Lao entry.
- From the Lao checkpoint, buses, minivans and taxis reach central Vientiane in about 30 minutes.
Documents
- Many nationalities can obtain a Lao visa on arrival or an e-Visa; ASEAN nationals generally enter visa-free. Bring passport photos and cash for the fee, and check the current rules before travel.
- Laos uses the kip; Thai baht and US dollars are widely accepted, but exchange rates at the border are poor — change only what you need.
Continuing on the Laos–China Railway to Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang
Vientiane is the southern terminus of the high-speed line. Its station is on the outskirts (a different station from Khamsavath). Vang Vieng is about one hour and Luang Prabang about two hours by train. Tickets go on sale only a few days ahead and sell out fast; buy online the moment sales open.
